Theoretical Yield Concepts

Key Definitions:

Theoretical Yield:

The maximum amount of product that can be formed in a chemical reaction, calculated from stoichiometry.

Actual Yield:

The amount of product actually obtained from a reaction in the laboratory or industrial process.

Percent Yield:

The ratio of actual yield to theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage. Always ≤ 100%.

Calculation Steps:

  1. Write and balance the chemical equation
  2. Identify the limiting reactant
  3. Use stoichiometry to convert moles of limiting reactant to moles of product
  4. Convert moles of product to desired units (grams, etc.)
  5. Compare with actual yield to calculate percent yield
Formula:

Percent Yield = (Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) × 100%
