Functional Group Nomenclature

Molecular Formula to Name

Naming Rules Reference

IUPAC Priority Order:

1. Carboxylic acids (-COOH) → -oic acid

2. Esters (-COO-) → -oate

3. Amides (-CONH₂) → -amide

4. Aldehydes (-CHO) → -al

5. Ketones (C=O) → -one

6. Alcohols (-OH) → -ol

7. Amines (-NH₂) → -amine

Basic Steps:

1. Find the longest carbon chain

2. Identify the principal functional group

3. Number the chain (lowest numbers for functional group)

4. Name substituents alphabetically

5. Combine: (substituents)-(root)-(suffix)

Carbon Chain Prefixes:

1: meth-
2: eth-
3: prop-
4: but-
5: pent-
6: hex-
7: hept-
8: oct-
