Balancing Chemical Equations Guide

Steps to Balance Equations:

  1. Count atoms: List all elements and count atoms on each side
  2. Start with complex molecules: Balance the most complex compound first
  3. Use coefficients: Add coefficients (numbers in front) to balance
  4. Balance one element at a time: Work systematically through each element
  5. Save hydrogen and oxygen for last: These are often in multiple compounds
  6. Check your work: Verify all elements are balanced
  7. Use smallest whole numbers: Reduce coefficients to lowest terms

Conservation Laws:

Conservation of Mass:

Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products

Conservation of Atoms:

Number of each type of atom is conserved

Conservation of Charge:

Total charge is conserved in the reaction

Common Balancing Tips:

  • Never change chemical formulas, only add coefficients
  • Balance polyatomic ions as units when they appear unchanged
  • Use fractions if needed, then multiply to get whole numbers
  • Check that coefficients are in lowest terms
